CITY OF THE FUTURE
CITY OF THE FUTURE: A DESIGN AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE FOR CITIES OF THE UNDERWORLD
Kuth Ranieri Architects
San Francisco, CA
City of the Future envisions the city of San Francisco expanding its infrastructure to become a central network for hyper-globalization while aggressively preserving its distinctive regional autonomy and beauty. A new Delta Gate seawall separating the ocean and bay, integrates geo-thermal energy production, desalination and regional transit in the form of a monumental FOLD of water.
Challenge
The History Channel invited us to propose a vision for the city of San Francisco 2108 for its City of the Future Challenge. We envisioned San Francisco expanding its infrastructure to become a central network hub for hyper-globalization while aggressively preserving its distinctive regional autonomy and beauty.
Project
The project responds to dramatic global and climatic transformations with a new monumental seawall at the Golden Gate; regulating its ocean, delta and bay water levels. The 12 miles of aquatic infrastructure provides connection to an off shore super-scaled Airport City, integrating regional issues of high-speed transit and local energy production with environmental preservation. The structure accommodates geo-thermal energy plants, tidal turbines, desalination facilities, and waste water disposal.
